The modern world seems to be increasingly losing direction. Technology is developing rapidly, but instead leaves existential injuries in the hearts of its young generation. Based on the survey Pew Research Center (2021), many young people, especially from the Gen Z, said their lives were “meaningless”. In Indonesia, reports from Indonesian Mental Medicine Specialist Association (PDSKJI) recorded an increase in the suicide rate of young people by 5% per year. This phenomenon is not just a psychological problem, but an existential crisis originating from spiritual vacuum and value disorientation.
Root problem: digital secularization and nihilism
The emptiness of this meaning is not born just like that. It arises from the secularization of life values, where God and religion are separated from the space of individual consciousness. In the digital world, the flow of nihilism – the view that life has no objective goals – is applied through shallow entertainment content, “Yolo” culture (you only live once), and glying freedom without responsibility.
Unfortunately, spiritual-existential education does not get enough space in school or in the household. As a result, young people grow with a healthy body, but the soul is fragile.
Islamic Solution: Finding the meaning of life in monotheism and tazkiyatun nafs
- Existential monotheism: Life is devotion
In Islam, the meaning of life is not determined by material or social status, except by divine orientation. Allah said:
I did not create jinn and humanity except to worship
Meaning: “I don’t create jinn and humans except to worship me.” (QS: Adz-Dzariyat Verse 56)
In the view of Imam Ath-Thibari, God created jinn and humans so that they will recognize their uniqueness and submit to worship it. As follows the following inspiration:
Some of them say: The meaning of this is: what is happiness of jinn and human happiness except for my worship, and their signs because of my disobedience. Other people say: Instead, that means that. I don’t make jinn and humans

- Tazkiyatun nafs: soul cleaning from empty ambitions
In the book of Fushul Al-‘ilmiyyah Wal Ushul Al-Hikamiyah, Al-Habib Abdullah bin Alawi Al-Haddad explained that liver disease is a variety of hearts.
And many liver diseases, and one of the most dangerous and dangerous doubts in religion and God
Meaning: “Some of the most heartbreaking and most dangerous diseases, including the most concerned and most dangerous are doubting (truth) of religion (we seek protection in SWT Allah), the weakness of faith in God Almighty, and His messengers and subsequently, seeking the attention of spells through the worship of Allah SWT, which acts to God’s servants.
And scarcity, misery, jealousy, hatred, fraud for Muslims, love the world, caring for it, long hope, forgetting death, ignoring the hereafter, and leaving work for it, for other liver diseases and their diseases
Meaning: “Think, peloring, jealousy, revenge, love to deceive Muslims, the world of love, ambitions, longing, forgetting death, neglect from the hereafter and don’t do it and many other heart diseases.” Fushul Al-‘ilmiyyah Wal Usul Al-Hikamiyah (Juz, 1, p. 99)
The solution is to do tazkiyatun nafs – the soul of the soul through:
- Tarabbur Qouuliyah and Cauniyah Verses (reflect on the meaning of the Qur’an and Nature)
- Muroqobah (Feeling watched by Allah all the time)
- Look for (self -introspection regularly)
Al -Ghazali said in the resurrection: do not describe the soul and only match the monitoring, accountability and struggle
Meaning: “The soul will not be clean and will not be straight except with muraqabah, reflection, and mujahadah.” (Ihya ” ulumiddin, juz 3)
With Tazkiyatun Nafs, an empty heart began to be filled by the presence of Allah SWT, not by social recognition or worldly achievement.
- Ruhani Mentoring: The Role of Murshid and Teachers of the Koran
In the classical Sufism tradition, the spiritual supervisor (Murshid) has an important role in directing the soul of the student. The Book of Ruuhul Busan emphasizes that Murshid is not only a science teacher, but a spiritual supervisor:
Anyone who does not have a sheikh, the sheikh, the devil
Meaning: “Anyone who does not have a teacher (murshid), then the devil is the teacher.” (Interpretation of Ruuhul Bayan, Juz 5/264)
Regarding the relationship of a teacher and a student, Imam al-Ghazali explained,
People who want a sheikh and a professor who does not do it is not transferred to guide him to the road, because the path of religion is a meteor. Anyone who does not have an old man who guides him, Satan takes him to his way, not a place. He who walked in the path of the houses that were captivated, without light, then he had risked himself and his family, and the independent of his soul was the same because it dried near him, and if it was still a period of time, and it was not discarded, then the person who was killed was not intended
Meaning: “A student must have the figure of the Sheikh and the teacher who was followed and led him to the road. Religious paths were so steep, while so many paths of Satan. Whoever has no teacher, then the devil will mislead the way. Like people who pass a dangerous interior without a guide, it will greatly threaten the safety. The teacher. (See Ihya ‘Ulumiddin, Juz 1, p. 98)
This is where the importance of halaqoh, ta’lim assembly, and spiritual teacher who guides the soul of the arid existence to the true meaning of life.
The crisis of identity and emptiness of meaning is not only a matter of the younger generation, but a mirror of a society that loses the values of the Spirit. Islam, with the teachings of monotheism and tazkiyah, offers a light house: Life as a service, not consumption; As a spiritual journey, not egocentrism celebration.
Come back to the teachings based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet, to the ulama who guide, and to a life centered on Allah SWT. Because, only with that, an empty soul can be filled again, and life without direction can rediscover the true meaning.
